Tonight, Friday May 14, brings Seattle two great events. Whether you are looking to groove or chill, here are two cheap options of great musical line-ups to suit your mood:

First up is a birthday celebration at Waid’s that has smartly booked me, Coral, and Amanita to provide the groovy beats. It’s open to the public and I open the evening at 10, so come a little early and don’t forget your dancing shoes! The cover is $5-10.

Secondly, but certainly not lastly, is the Ambire Linearis finally at Space in Greenwood. Live ambient goodness will be provided by Gel-Sol, Carl Sagan’s Ghost, and some other fine folks. Full details can be found here. They don’t say in the post, but the past shows ahve been only $5 at the door, so I’m assuming this will be as well. The Ambire Linearis shows have all been excellent, and Space is a perfect venue for this type of show. I was extra excited to catch this one as I’m a big fan of both Gel-Sol and Carl Sagan’s Ghost, but silly me forgot what night this was on when accepting the booking for the birthday party. Bummer….

Here’s a little preview of the set Carl Sagan’s Ghost has been preparing for tonight:

I’m not looking forward to seeing it at Showbox Sodo, but this man has a direct connection to the Creative Source, and I do my best not to miss those sorts of people when they come to my town.

Check out this teaser for “Go Quiet”, a film to included in the limited & digital special editions of his upcoming album “Go”.

“the concept behind ‘go quiet’ was simple: it’s new year’s day in reykjavík, and jónsi awakens to a trashed house in the wake of his party. he avoids cleaning up and instead procrastinates by playing songs that reflect the night before, the bittersweetness of new year, and the melancholy of a year gone by” – director dean deblois.

Fantastic news from Gas’ blog, Woob’s seminal 1194 album from Emit Records, is being re-released, with new material to be released in early 2010. If you know Woob, you know why this is a good thing. If you don’t know Woob, and are a fan of mellow atmospheric music, then definitely put 1194 on your wishlist. It is a classic of the genre, from of the mid-90′s defining labels, and one of my all-time favorite albums.

Here’s the interview from Gas:

Good news. Paul Frankland is re-releasing his Woob project from his days on the Emit record label. I still remember hearing its cool sounds wafting through the Square Dance offices (recording studio) whilst I was editing my Gas album.

It was the first solo artist album on Emit, and immediately on release in 1994 it was praised by critics and public. It has since become much sought after, fetching high prices secondhand.

I spoke to Paul about the album and his memories about recording it.

MAT JARVIS: What are you re-releasing and when will they be available?

PAUL FRANKLAND: The first Woob album (Woob 1194) will be available worldwide on iTunes by the end of December, and includes a minimalist booklet.

EP1 consisting of some classic, hard to find tracks is available now for a name-your-own-price, from free! – here

Odonna (Bells mix) edit, on download, get it here or on Amazon. later on iTunes.

There will be a brand new 10 minute track available for download on 1.1.10.

MAT: Which are your favourite tracks on the album?

PAUL: Odonna/Strange Air. I’m fond of them all though.

MJ: Most of the tracks are ten minutes or longer, was this a conscious decision to make lengthy tracks, or did they just happen?

PF:The way I wrote the tracks back then, was like a live performance and so I never heard the track complete or knew the length till it was over, but yes it was a conscious decision, although 25 minutes into mixing ‘On Earth’ there was a heart pounding moment when I improvised a synth section. Its probably my favorite bit of the whole album now though.

What were you trying to create when you started writing the album, and did it turn out as you first envisioned?

I tried to create an album with a loose narrative that guides the listener’s mind through different environments. I also wanted the LP to sound as organic as possible without any too thin or too electronic sounding synths.

What was the process for writing the album?

I had an Atari ST running Sequencer One plus, an Akai s950, Gem s2, a boss delay pedal, home made reverb, tape deck, ghetto-blaster, video recorder and a DAT machine. I made rough sets of each track, then took everything with me into the studio and finished off the tracks using the extra equipment available. Every track was mixed and performed live, none were edited down.

How much use did you make of the Roland RSS 3D processor?

Ha- yeah that was massive and expensive and we did use it on every track but it was pretty limited and was only of real use on percussion tracks to add an extra dimension. Still, it must have had some lasting effect on me as around 10 years ago I was given a cut-down rack version as a present, and I am using it on some of the new material.

What is your one memory of your time on the Emit label?

I remember the first time I stepped into the live room at Square Centre studios – it was a vast, open space with a control room overlooking around 15 foot above.

And, what is a Woob? Wuub?

Woob was a made up word. that sounded unique.
Wuub is a hybrid of woob and dub.

What was the thinking behind choosing penguins for the cover?

The label managers (Chris & Dave) said to me that they would really like to use Penguins for the cover and what did I think. I’d just written the track Emperor and was going to suggest the same. It was a very strange coincidence

Thanks Paul, and good luck with the re-releases and new Woob tracks. Here are the Woob releases available now…
EP1 – visit…
Odonna (Bells mix) – visit…
And Later releases…
Woob 1194 (late December on iTunes)
Brand new track on 1|1|10.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, you’ll find me at this year’s installment Seacompression, the Northwest’s regional Burning Man decompression party. If you’ve never been, it’s like taking 3 square blocks of Burning Man and cramming it into a 25,000 sq ft warehouse. In a nutshell, it’s awesome and quite unlike any other party in the entire Northwest. Check out this floor plan to get a preview of the craziness ahead.

In the past I’ve DJed at one of the dance stages, but this year I’ll be keeping it mellow in the sublime H’Art Center chillout dome. This was by far my favorite part about last year’s party, so I’m super stoked to have been invited to play some mellow beats there this time around.

Full event details are here.

Here’s a short, fun video log from Seacomp 2007:
At times his sound is very reminiscent of Sigor Rós’ more ambient moments, and his bowed guitar style is probably responsible for some of that similarity.

For a sample, be sure to check out “No Place for Us,” a free EP download from Ghostly International. If that floats your boat, then you can’t go wrong with picking up last year’s full length LP, “Glider,” and the recently released “Murmur EP.”

Three instruments have been stoking the fires of my gear-lust a lot lately. I’m just putting this out there in case Santa is listening and has not been effected too much by the economic crisis.

Tenori-on
There is lots to love about this thing. The portability, the method of sequencing, the pretty lights, the interface, and perhaps most importantly, the freedom of not needing a computer. There are tons of videos out there about the Tenori-on, but this on is the most musical that I’ve seen.

Fender Rhodes
Oh, that smooth Rhodes sound…. It just slips into your ears and hugs you from the inside. I would not have a place in my studio to put one of these things, but I would certainly make some serious layout compromises to squeeze one in. That classic, soulful sound just calls to me.

Hang
This is a incredibly hard instrument to purchase. Only a few are made each year, and the desirability should be obvious. That combination of smooth melodious notes from a percussive instrument really attracts me. Due to the scarcity of the Hang, this is realistically the instrument of these three lusts that I’m least likely to ever own. A boy can dream though.

I love the blossoming genre of ”ambient” games. To quote this page, “Growing out of ideas in ambient music, ambient gaming is defined as “ignorable as it is interesting” after Brian Eno’s description of ambient music.”

Enter Blush from the fine game developers at Flashbang Studios / Blurst. While Blush doesn’t fully fit within my understanding of the ambient game genre, it certainly hits close enough to mark that I find it interesting. It is a fantastic Unity game the seems to be part Snake, part Osmos and a dash of something new, so it’s a bit more active and competitive than a true ambient game. You play as a translucent, neon jellyfish, trying to survive in a translucent, neon deep-sea scape. By whipping your tentacles around you collect the eggs of other sea creatures, and deposit them in specific locations to power-up your jelly vessel to take on larger sea creatures. The controls are dead simple, the game physics are smooth, and the visual style and effects are serious eye-candy.

From Blurst’s blog:

Blush is a free game about the underwater exploits of a physics based squid (or Crystalline Attack Sperm, depending on who you talk to.) As you collect eggs and return them to the various glowing catchers, your tentacles grow longer and your speed increases. By the end of the game, you’re brawling against some rather sizable critters. We’ll let you discover just how large and how many for yourselves!

The best part about all this is that it’s free! Give it a play over at http://blurst.com/blush/. There’s lots of great making-of posts on the Blurst blog, so check that out as well, if you are into such things.

Like the soundtrack? dB Soundworks has made all three tracks used in the game available for download here.

Good news everyone!

Roundhouse is gearing up for another live Shpongle performance on Oct 30, 2009, in connection with the release of their fourth studio album. If this show will be anything like their 2008 Halloween show, it is sure to be another over-the-top live spectacle. Hopefully they webcast the show again, as it was quite a treat to enjoy the performance from the comfort of my couch. Air travel seems to be cheap now, though, so part of me is running the numbers on a London trip to catch this in person.

To quote the Roundhouse event listing:

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Shpongle, the hugely popular ambient project from Simon Posford and co-pilot Raja Ram.

I picked up Movements, the new Solar Fields album, last week and have been listening to it daily since. The short of it is that this album is amazing. I’ve been a huge fan of Solar Fields for quite a while, and Movements fully delivers on that Solar Fields sound that I so love. I like to describe the Solar Fields sound as Arena Ambient because it’s as if he’s writing epic music to be played on giant PAs in huge stadiums. Massive bass with precise percussion and smooth, evolving textures and melodies fluttering in and out of the scape, digging deep into your emotional core, without ever stepping into cheese territory. Man, a Solar Fields arena show would just be breathtaking.

There’s nothing ground-breaking about Movements, just huge, emotional scores that are so satisfying that its easy to just let this album loop over and over. It’s interesting to me that while his sound and techniques seemed to have changed little from his first release, I have not yet tired of his brand of musical magic. He’s definitely tapped into something that just speaks to me. It’s like every release is a further refinement of that sound, leading the listener further into the depths of the same mysterious musical cavern.

If you are a fan of Solar Fields, getting this album is a must. If you are fan of the mellower flavors of electronica, you too must get this album. Not sure if you are into either of the former? You could certainly do worse things than buying Movements and giving it a chance. Check the track and videos below for a sampling of the album.
From the race riots of 1967 to the underground party scene of the late 1980s, Detroit’s economic downturn didn’t stop the invention of a new kind of music that brought international attention to its producers and their hometown.” more…

I recorded this video at the AfriAsianEurAmericana Muzik show at Skylark on the Oct. 19, 2008. Performing are James Whetzel on sarod and Sebastian Lange on violin and beats.

I’m ever so grateful to call these two very talented individuals my friends and get to hear them play out quite a bit, though rarely in a performance like this. They both played solo sets that night, and then jammed with each other for a bit. I recorded several videos of their session, but this video really captured a special moment in the set. I don’t know if this is a rehearsed piece or improve (as they are known to do on many occasions), but I think they’ve really tapped into an interesting sound. It’s very rare to hear them play this riff-based, duet of the sarod and violin and I find the dynamics and repetition of a central theme really moving.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Meet Tom Cosm, electronic musician/digital busker.

This man is an active participant, a pioneer even, in one of the more exciting new fronts in electronic music. Specifically, the free sharing of music, knowledge, techniques and actual working files. His style covers a lot of ground, but there’s a definite Tom Cosm sound, typified by super funky, almost spazzy, bass lines with a heavy layer of glitch-like effects. As he mentions in the introduction video, he releases all of this creativity and knowledge into the world for free, partly as a promotional effort to drum up bookings and partly just to share with the universe. This is where the “Digital Busker” title comes into play. There are several ways to donate a few dollars when you can to help him continue down this path. Often he lists specific goals for his donation requests. Currently, he’s asking for help drumming up the cash to upgrade to Ableton Live 7.

Check out his latest track, Heaps Good Strong Board:
[See post to listen to audio]

Pretty cool, huh? Now here’s the brilliant part, go here to download the full Ableton Live set that allows you to perform or remix this track. There’s even a tutorial video to walk you through the entire file and how he’d use it in a live performance situation.

If you are an electronic musician (aspiring or otherwise) or just a fan of interesting music and want to know more about the processes behind making it, I highly encourage you to go to his site, TomCosm.com. Download his music, Ableton Live performance packs and tutorial videos, subscribe to his blog, and donate a few dollars if his selfless sharing of ideas and music inspires you in any way. This concept of a Digital Busker is perhaps the future of music on the Internet, and hopefully Tom not only inspires musicians with his software techniques, but also with his philosophy.

In a related bit of sharing, the super awesome duo Pitch Black has offered up their track Harmonia for remxing and personal use. You can download the complete Ableton Live file here: pitchblack.co.nz/harmonia.

Whatever is in the water in New Zealand (the home of both Tom Cosm and Pitch Black), I hope it spreads throughout the world and this idea of freely sharing your working files catches on. Musicians are becoming content creators, DJs are becoming remix artists and producers, and all of this blurring between rolls in the grand electronic music circle can only lead to better music and performances for us all. The DJ as it has been known is on their way out, and soon (if it isn’t already true), it will take original content, remixes and mash-ups to make any sort of statement worth listening to.

Last night at Contour, Ryan Johnson was doing live digital painting while the DJs did their thing. As an avid Photoshop user myself, it was fascinating to watch him build up this stunning painting step by step. I spent the majority of my set turned around watching the screen over my head. This man is a great illustrator/painter and it was quite enjoyable to watch someone use the Photoshop brush engine so expertly. Seems like this is a fairly regular thing for him to do (live painting that is), so I really look forward to catching him in action again.

Here’s some video that I captured of him doing his thing while I played:

Wow. Wow. Wow. Such a spectacular show. Crystal clear sound, huge projections, thick moody lighting and all watched from a really great seat. Very few bands (that I listen to anyway) have such a dynamic range within their music as Sigur Rós, who smoothly transitioned from monochrome melancholy to full-blown psychedelic orgasm of sound and lights. This was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, probably second only to Roger Waters doing Dark Side of the Moon at Key Arena.

I overheard someone while walking out exclaiming “That was the best $50 I’ve ever spent!” and I couldn’t agree more. Twice that would have felt worth it.

Even if you don’t really know them, never pass up a chance to witness them live. It is a musical experience that is truly hard to top.

Check out this decent video clip of their recent tour stop in LA. Our Benaroya experience was nearly identical only in smaller venue. This was just one of many awe inspiring moments throughout the show.

PS. Here’s a hot seating tip for Benaroya Hall. Skip looking for the Orchestra Center. Look for an aisle seat in Orchestra R or L. You’ll be looking a bit diagonal to the stage, but with the expansive aisle next to you, there are no worries of a tall head or stander blocking your view.

PPS. I found out how to embed the High Quality verisons of YouTube videos during the course of making this post. Paste the string “&ap=%2526fmt%3D18″ directly after the video embed URL in the embed code that YouTube provides. This page provides a more in depth explanation of the process.
