Attention PNW-based ambient heads: The venerable Rafael Anton Irisarri (aka The Sight Below) is curating an intentionally very limited capacity music + visual event. Substrata 1.1, happening July 15-17, and will feature work from Biosphere, Oren Ambarchi, Eluvium, Nils Frahm, Benoît Pioulard, Marcus Fischer, Crys Cole, and I3O.

Substrata 1.1 is a three-day sound & visual art event held in Seattle, WA, scheduled for July 15 thru July 17, 2011.

Substrata seeks to explore varying perspectives of scale though the use of sound, composition and visuals – an international showcase featuring accomplished artists working in the cutting edge where structural abstraction meets physical dynamics.

By creating compositional spaces dealing with a sense of mass, along with openness of structure, the perspective of scale and the listeners place in relation is shifted to allow for greater a sense of ‘place’ beyond the environ of the performance in the interplay of the moment and physics of the larger world.

Wherein the most minute of gestures are made significant, or massive planes of perspective become revealed, as dynamic interplay builds these spaces that are as much acoustically sensed, as perceived in the mind’s eye. Each showcase features distinctly different takes of the potency of this kind of minimalism, varying between weighty combinations of bass and tonalities used to sculpt out atmospheric ambiance, or powerful dynamic structures made up of the subtlest filigree of sonic building materials.

As the name “substrata” implies, it is about subtle aesthetics that go beneath the surface and into deeper aural territories.

At its nucleus: a two-day performance program, followed by an auditory field trip to the beautiful Cascade mountain range. During the field trip, a small group of participants will spend time with the performing artists while capturing environmental recordings. This exercise will foster a newfound appreciation for our natural surroundings and create a platform for meaningful interaction between artists/participants while exploring a new locality.

First up is a birthday celebration at Waid’s that has smartly booked me, Coral, and Amanita to provide the groovy beats. It’s open to the public and I open the evening at 10, so come a little early and don’t forget your dancing shoes! The cover is $5-10.

Secondly, but certainly not lastly, is the Ambire Linearis finally at Space in Greenwood. Live ambient goodness will be provided by Gel-Sol, Carl Sagan’s Ghost, and some other fine folks. Full details can be found here. They don’t say in the post, but the past shows ahve been only $5 at the door, so I’m assuming this will be as well. The Ambire Linearis shows have all been excellent, and Space is a perfect venue for this type of show. I was extra excited to catch this one as I’m a big fan of both Gel-Sol and Carl Sagan’s Ghost, but silly me forgot what night this was on when accepting the booking for the birthday party. Bummer….

A weekend full of music, workshops and yoga, all in an effort to raise some funds to do some legally require structural updates. Everyone in town seems to be involved with this, so it should be a fantastic coming together of the tribes in support of a very important asset to our diverse scene. Saturday, May 8 :: Psilicon Dreams 7 on DI.FM
I recorded the May 2010 installment of Psilicon Dreams last night. The first half of the set is deep and mellow, then moves into a nice dubby groove for the second half. Tune in to DI.FM’s Psychill channel at 9am US PST / 12pm US EST / 5pm UK / 18:00 Central Europe to catch its debut. I’ll post the set here for download later in the weekend.

Saturday, May 8 :: Shpongle (DJ) and Hallucinogen (live) at The Showbox
This show is going to be amazing. The latest Shpongle album is perhaps their best yet, and Hallucinogen is easily my favorite producer on the planet. I’m totally stoked for this event. Plus there is an afterparty at the Church of Bass, with the Future Nurses, Coral, DEFIB, and Hendrik. Saturday/Sunday morning is full of all kinds of awesome.

The next jambient/b-movie session is in the works and scheduled for May 10 at The Can Can.

It’s here! Kinetic 4 at the Pacific Science Center. We’ve been planning our portion of this event for sometime now and now it is time to make it all happen. Chillography is excited to not only have the best room in the entire PSC for stage (freaking robot dinosaurs!), but also having perhaps our best line-up yet. This will not suck.

Much of my excitement also comes from the fact that John Ames and I get to debut our new music project, A Delicate Moment. We play from 10-11, and have an entire hour of brand-spankin’-new melodic, dubby, psychedelic, downtempo goodness, heavily layered with John’s crazy cello skills. This set has been months in the making and I can’t wait to show off the awesome sauce that we have concocted.

Tonight, Friday, March 19 is Head|Set with Vibrasphere at Waid’s. I love love love Vibrasphere’s blend of progressive, trance and techno, and word is he’ll be finishing his set with some their über delicious downtempo. They’ve been on my list of bands to see for such a long time now, and tonight I finally get to. Bonus points for having this at Waid’s House of Love. Such a great venue. Full event info is here.

Then, Saturday, March 20 is Joe Nice at Chop Suey. This two-roomed, dubstep/techno show is sure the be a great counterpoint to tonight’s progressive trance extravaganza. I have to be honest… I don’t really know anything about Joe, but my friends who are putting on this event are really excited about him, and I trust them, so I am excited too. Plus, the rest of the line-up, and especially the techno side room are full of great DJs. At $10, I am totally willing to support my friends and expose my ears to some new music. The dance stage in the side room looked and sounded amazing this year, and I applaud the decision to only place on sound system in there. I know it was tough to whittle down the list of 40 some DJs that wanted to play to the 10 or so that got slots, but it was a better party because of that effort.

The only real knock against the night I had was that due to the new extra stringent fire code mandates, the space did feel significantly sparser than past Seacomps. Not being able cover canopies in flowy fabrics and wacky art made for a colder, less inviting space. I know everyone did what they could under the new rules, but it did make a notable impact on the decor of a typically sensory overloading event.

Hooray! The Chillography 201 sets are now available for download.:) Click on over to the Chillography downloads page and enjoy the sunshine inspired music from Crispy, Lara, 0×86, EQlateral (live), Osiris Indriya, and Hendrik, recorded one amazing summer day on the Seattle waterfront.

Starting at 8pm at the ridiculously awesome venue of St. Mark’s Cathedral will be Water Sines, The Concert.

On the evening of November 7, the Water Sines orchestra will perform improvisational music for meditation. The diverse ensemble showcases music inspired by guitarist Sidney Genette. It features Native American flautist Paul Wagner, members of Seattle’s EQLateral string quartet and a host of instrumental soloists. Special guest artists from many cultures will whisper poems, prayers, and affirmations on the theme of water. Adding to the ethereal experience, a yoga–inspired dance troupe will perform a water blessing ritual. This all takes place against a backdrop of moving water imagery with an accompaniment of river and ocean sounds by audio capturist and Emmy Award–winner Gordon Hempton, renowned for his catalog of nature music.

While that description makes it sound new-age hippy-dippy, and there is much truth to that, what gets me so excited about this is the combination of a stunning acoustic space with a stacked line-up of Seattle’s best forward-thinking musicians, dancers, poets and lighting technicians. I may be a bit biased since I am friends with most of said line-up, but when you get all of those people performing on the same stage, regardless of your interest in ambient music, you cannot go wrong. Truly, this is going to be an epic concert performance at a very special venue that has never housed music like this.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, you’ll find me at this year’s installment Seacompression, the Northwest’s regional Burning Man decompression party. If you’ve never been, it’s like taking 3 square blocks of Burning Man and cramming it into a 25,000 sq ft warehouse. In a nutshell, it’s awesome and quite unlike any other party in the entire Northwest. Check out this floor plan to get a preview of the craziness ahead.

In the past I’ve DJed at one of the dance stages, but this year I’ll be keeping it mellow in the sublime H’Art Center chillout dome. This was by far my favorite part about last year’s party, so I’m super stoked to have been invited to play some mellow beats there this time around.

Another fantastic Chillography come and gone. Music-wise, this may have been one of my favorites yet, with Eckoe opening with his perfect blend of psychill, followed by Kalpataru Tree’s siiiiiick dubby goodness, Manahan’s midtempo romp and finally Scott Sunn’s deeeeeep techno shplunking. Add that to Jenna and team’s beautiful makeover of the Church of Bass, Cupcake or Dies baked goodness, and the projected Entranced game, and we had all the right ingredients for a superb party.

The entire night was recorded and I’ll be posting the sets to the Chillography site, once I get around to processing the recording. I’m still working on the recordings from 201, but both shows will be available very soon. I promise!

A 3hr set from a producer on the bleeding edge of the techno/trance movement + a sweet underground venue + extended hours + a tag set by Coral and me (Crispy) + Future Nurses + Hendrik = a killer night of oontz. Plus it’s still only $10 (if you get in before 11pm)!

Perfect Stranger typically plays for crowds of thousands at European festivals… come along for his 3hr journey as he plays in the intimate setting of the CoB.
