Here’s episode 17 of Psilicon Dreams, my monthly mix series for Digitally Imported Radio. I’m super happy with how this one turned out, and it’s been on heavy rotation since I recorded it earlier in the month. It features some sick bass n’ ooze beats and rock-solid downtempo grooves, with a thick coating of dubbed-out fx by yours truly. This is not your typical psychill mix, but then again, typical is not what I’m going for. There were 3 new compilations that formed the central inspiration for #17: Painting Pictures On Silence V1, Elysium, and Psycho Navigator. If you dig the set, I can’t recommend picking up these comps enough.

Presenting episode 15 of my Psilicon Dreams mix series for Digitally Imported Radio. The first half of the set is some super chill, meditative ambient that I’ve been setting aside for inclusion in a mix for a while now. I could (and should at some point) easily mix an entire set of nearly beatless ambient, but since that is not the true format of the Psychill station which Psilicon Dreams is created for, I pick up the pace and feature a slew of awesome new tracks by newcomer Subaqueous, Ott, Phutureprimitive, and Digital Drop (Isreal). As usual, this episode bounces all around the psychill genre, hopefully showing off the wonderful level of variety in styles that all contribute to this re-blossoming class of music.

For January 2011′s episode of Psilicon Dreams, my monthly mix for Digitally Imported’s Psychill channel, I decided to honor one of my favorite record lables, Ultimae Records, by crafting a set entirely of music from their vast catalog of powerful and well-crafted electronica. Nearly every episode of Psilicon Dreams has contained a track or two from Ultimae, and after a recent purchase of several of their newer releases, it was an easy choice to just go all in this round. This mix is but a wee sampling of their expansive catalog, so I can’t encourage you enough to do some exploring of your own. You seriously can’t go wrong with anything with their name on it.

And of course, what would a tribute to Ultimae be without a cover in their iconic style. It looks like they’ve changed it up for their most recent releases, but that heavy black letterbox look with abstract photography made for an instantly recognizable CD.

Here it is… Psilicon Dreams 12, my monthly mix of psychedelic downtempo electronica for DI.FM’s Psychill channel, for November 2010. This mix marks the beginning of year 2 for Psilicon Dreams. Crazy… I’d have thought that I would have run out of great music to put in these monthly mixes by now, but I keep being amazed by how much awesome stuff is out there. I’ll keep mixing them as long as it keeps being easy to find the good stuff. When that becomes work, though, that’s when I pull the plug.

This month’s mix was inspired by a growing pile of glitchy/scratchy/squishy tunes that just don’t quite fit within the standard psychill cannon, so I decided to explore the outer edges of the genre, and give these tunes their proper moment of glory.

The track highlights are numerous this month. Starting it all off is the Logic Bomb’s opening track from the classic TIP World release, Twelve. I had kind of forgotten about this release, but now that it is back on my radar, I’m sure other tracks from it’s all star line-up of artists will appear in future mixes.

Following that is another piece from Eitan Reiter’s Places I Miss That I Haven’t Been To. I really love this album and will likely end up including most of it in my mixes. It reminds me a lot of the classics of mid-90s, with its melodic arpeggios and straightforward song construction. It definitely takes be back some a great time for electronica, while modernizing the sound.

Then there’s another Sun In Aquarius track from his Liquid Fix EP. For those of you keeping score at home, I do believe that ol’ Sunny has appeared the most times in all of my mixes. I just can’t get enough of his über-deep explorations of psychedelic bass music.

Jumping a head a few and you’ll get to a new one from Tipper off his absolutely stellar new album Broken Soul Jamboree. Tipper’s brand of hyper produced music is always a cut above most, but his downtempo explorations on this album are really on a whole other level. It’s a shame he doesn’t get more attention in the psychill world, as he’s easily one of the best in the biz.

Out of Tipper comes the opening track from Mr. Projectile’s 2003 release, Sinking. This track really exemplifies the atmospheric and emotional idm that he is so good at creating. This track was a constant in my dj sets when it first came out, and I’m glad to finally get it in a recorded set.

Moving on, I present to you another track from one of my recent favorite releases, Cloudcycle, from Mauxuam and Greg Hunter, with help from Master Margherita, Ishq, and Liguna Lustra. This track is darker than my usual flavor, but it just moves me. The distorted guitar, the perfect head-bobbin’ beat, and all the psychedelic fx make for a killer concoction. More please!

Then to close it all out, and leaving the set on a serious high note, is a track from Nagual Sound Experiment’s epic Invisible Movements release. If you like bass and dub and psychedelia and precision percussion programming, you need this album. I’ve been waiting years for the perfect set to drop this track, and Psilicon Dreams 12 is that set. It’s got an old rave feel, while still keeping all that energy under tight control.

Presenting Psilicon Dreams 11, my monthly mix of psychedelic downtempo electronica for DI.FM’s Psychill channel, for October 2010.

I really like how this mix turned out. Inspiration for the set came from the surprising realization that I had yet to feature Counted by Fünf D in a Psilicon Dreams mix. This track is one of my all-time favorite tunes, and certainly one of the finest pieces of psychill ever produced. So, setting the mood with the smooth, evolving flow of such a fine opening tune, I was extra particular in my selection duties.

Track 2 is a cut from Eitan Reiter’s new solo album, Places I Miss That I Haven’t Been To. I absolutely love this album, expect to hear more from it in future sets.

All tracks in the set are above average, but another particular highlight is All Things Passing by Kalpataru Tree, the title track from most recent self-released EP. It’s only $5… get it! When will a label be smart enough to pick up this guy? Someone in the DI.FM Psychill forum called his sound “cozy” and I couldn’t agree more. Big things are sure to be in his future.

Closing out the set, I’m particularly fond of the Shulman > Shulman > Celtic Cross > Hallucinogen block. It’s just pure psychedelic-chillout bliss. Shulman is a master of the genre, who started off as yet another Shpongle sound-alike, but has progressed into a force all his own. I usually steer away from mixing two tracks by the same artist, but this one couldn’t be avoided. The set commanded it and I who am I to argue with the set? As for Celtic Cross – Jade Gates (Beauty Knows No Pain Mix), I only included the end, ambient portion, as the first half was just a bit too energetic for the set. Don’t be surprised if it shows up in another set, though… it’s a fine piece of music. And it definitely pairs perfectly with Hallucinogen’s Angelic Particles (Remix), the hidden track on his seminal release, Twisted, from 1995. It’s still just as powerful and beautiful today as it was 15 years ago. Holy crap! Can you believe it’s been 15 years?!

For the artwork, it’s a celebration of the iterations my psy-babe hase been through over the year. Next month’s set will be the start of year 2 for Psilicon Dreams, so I figure that’s a good time to start with a new cover art theme.

That makes number 10 a very bi-polar ride through the extremes of the psychill universe, with the first half representing the melodic side, before spelunking the hypnotic depths.

First up is a birthday celebration at Waid’s that has smartly booked me, Coral, and Amanita to provide the groovy beats. It’s open to the public and I open the evening at 10, so come a little early and don’t forget your dancing shoes! The cover is $5-10.

Secondly, but certainly not lastly, is the Ambire Linearis finally at Space in Greenwood. Live ambient goodness will be provided by Gel-Sol, Carl Sagan’s Ghost, and some other fine folks. Full details can be found here. They don’t say in the post, but the past shows ahve been only $5 at the door, so I’m assuming this will be as well. The Ambire Linearis shows have all been excellent, and Space is a perfect venue for this type of show. I was extra excited to catch this one as I’m a big fan of both Gel-Sol and Carl Sagan’s Ghost, but silly me forgot what night this was on when accepting the booking for the birthday party. Bummer….

Friday, May 7 – Sunday, May 9 :: Church of Bass Revival
A weekend full of music, workshops and yoga, all in an effort to raise some funds to do some legally require structural updates. Everyone in town seems to be involved with this, so it should be a fantastic coming together of the tribes in support of a very important asset to our diverse scene. I recorded the May 2010 installment of Psilicon Dreams last night. The first half of the set is deep and mellow, then moves into a nice dubby groove for the second half. Saturday, May 8 :: Shpongle (DJ) and Hallucinogen (live) at The Showbox
This show is going to be amazing. The latest Shpongle album is perhaps their best yet, and Hallucinogen is easily my favorite producer on the planet. I’m totally stoked for this event. Plus there is an afterparty at the Church of Bass, with the Future Nurses, Coral, DEFIB, and Hendrik. Saturday/Sunday morning is full of all kinds of awesome.

We invite you to come to Dancechurch this Wednesday for a fun night of dancing and community. Music starts at 7:30 and ends at 10, so please come early to catch it all.

Your presence means a lot to us! The church is going through a challenging time and dancing with you really helps!

All ages, family friendly, and alcohol free. $5-10 requested donation, no-one turned away for lack of funds. Water will be available for free (please bring your own cup or container). Hot tea, Freewil’s Kombucha, bottled water, reusable earplugs, and snacks will for sale.

Good news everyone! This Saturday brings the world the first monthly installment of my new show on Digitally Imported’s Psychill channel, Psilicon Dreams. On Saturday, Nov. 7, you’ll find me at this year’s installment Seacompression, the Northwest’s regional Burning Man decompression party. If you’ve never been, it’s like taking 3 square blocks of Burning Man and cramming it into a 25,000 sq ft warehouse. In a nutshell, it’s awesome and quite unlike any other party in the entire Northwest. Check out this floor plan to get a preview of the craziness ahead.

In the past I’ve DJed at one of the dance stages, but this year I’ll be keeping it mellow in the sublime H’Art Center chillout dome. This was by far my favorite part about last year’s party, so I’m super stoked to have been invited to play some mellow beats there this time around.

Yup yup. This is going to be good.:)

HOTwired has found a new home at the Church of Bass for the October 2nd show with Perfect Stranger. A 3hr set from a producer on the bleeding edge of the techno/trance movement + a sweet underground venue + extended hours + a tag set by Coral and me (Crispy) + Future Nurses + Hendrik = a killer night of oontz. Plus it’s still only $10 (if you get in before 11pm)!

Perfect Stranger typically plays for crowds of thousands at European festivals… come along for his 3hr journey as he plays in the intimate setting of the CoB.

Here’s the set I played at Dancechurch on 09.16.09. I’ve been itching to drop an explosive psytrance set and decided to let it all rip. The mixing is not 100% tight in a couple spots, but that’s how sometimes these off-the-cuff sets go. No worries, though, as these tracks are just so damn good it’s easy to forgive. Turn this shiz up and prepare for off blast!
