Woo(b)! The loooooooooong awaited new album from cinematic ambient master, Woob, dropped today. This is very good news. I’ve been a huge Woob fan since I was first passed a copy of his Em:t Records, 1194 release, which remains one of my all-time favorites. Woob’s deep atmospheric textures mingle with live instrumentation and half heard voices from a movie never filmed, and Repurpose does little mess with this winning formula. Finally! Some fresh new music from northwest psychill hero, Phutureprimitive. Out today is the Luminous EP, containing three new(ish) tracks. I say “newish” because it seems like Rain has been dropping these tracks in his sets for a while, and it’s nice to finally have my own copies to play out. Style-wise, fans of his first album and subsequent compilation contributions will recognize that signature Phutureprimitive moody atmosphere and delicious bass lines. What’s new is the addition of lyrical vocals in the forefront of the mix as the new driving force for each track. These lyrics, by Alyssa Palmer and Rain, have been tastefully edited and are seamless additions to the already lush Phutureprimitive soundscape. Vocals of this caliber seem to be tricky to find in this kind of electronica, and Rain pulls it off. My gut tells me that some old fans will not be so into this new lyrical direction, but it will most certainly open up his music to an even wider audience. With Phutureprimitive now performing as a full band, this new direction should be not much of a surprise, and thankfully, in Rain’s capable hands the vocals and music continue to push the mature downtempo vibe that first caught the world’s ear six years ago.

Holy hot sauce! The seminal (and much missed) goa/psytrance band The Green Nuns of the Revolution are resurfacing with a chilled out remix album, ala Hallucinogen in Dub.

The Underground psychedelic trance mavericks from England who caused joyous havoc at many an International party in the late 90’s are experiencing a resurgence of interest for which they have changed their socks. PAN ELECTRIC is the artist name for Matt Coldricks’ projects on Absolute Ambient records . The Pan Electric approach of variations rather than re-mixes allows for more creative interpretations of melodies and moods and marks a departure form the rather tired culture of remixes. Quirky, dubby and laced with colour, drama and humour this album is vivid, smells of carnivals, bonfires and tastes like the best spontaneous night in you’ve had. The sublime Seattle-based trip-hop duo, The New Law, laid down this fantastic set at Tost Lounge on Sept. 9, 2009. It’s a laid back mash of loungey hip-hop beats, a smattering of live sax, and vibey synth lines that will ease you perfectly into the weekend.

I’ve had the music of The Sight Below on continuous loop all morning, and it has been the perfect companion to the gray drizzly sky outside my window. The bus ride to work this morning was especially dreary, with the Space Needle and downtown just barely peeking through the haze, and it was matched perfectly by the beautiful melancholic guitarscapes and subtle back beats. At times his sound is very reminiscent of Sigor Rós’ more ambient moments, and his bowed guitar style is probably responsible for some of that similarity.

For a sample, be sure to check out “No Place for Us,” a free EP download from Ghostly International. If that floats your boat, then you can’t go wrong with picking up last year’s full length LP, “Glider,” and the recently released “Murmur EP.”

If you like this sort of minimal and moody ambient techno, be sure to also check out Yagya’s “Rigning” album. It’s another stunning example of the genre.

So cool. Check out the Ekdahl Moisturizer. It’s a spring reverb with exposed springs, which means that while it can be used as a traditional spring reverb by passing audio signals through the springs, you can also stroke, pluck, and fiddle with the exposed springs to create liquidy, bouncy audio goodness. If you are looking for a unique analog sound, for only $300 this unique effect/instrument would be a fine addition to your sonic arsenal. More info about the unit can be found here.

Here is the Reagenz live set from the Decibel Fest 2009 closing party. I was unable to make it out to this show, and heard amazing things about this set, so I’m super happy to be able to listen to it now. Reagenz is a duo comprised of Jonah Sharp (aka Spacetime Continum) and Move D. I was able to catch Spacetime Continum’s live ambient set at the Pan Cascadia Showcase earlier in the weekend and it was definitely a festival highlight for me. Spacetime atmospherics + mellow techno beats = total win. Enjoy!

I am absolutely loving this live set by Ashland, OR based Kalpataru Tree. An hour and a half of dank, lush psydub, with strong resemblances to Phutureprimitve and hints of Shpongle, Ott and Kuba. That’s four home runs in my book… no wonder I like this so much! I have got to get this man up for a Chillography set. That would be absolutely divine.

“Recorded live @ Priceless, Belden Town, CA. Priceless is an annual event put together by the False Profit crew out of the Bay Area. Held on the banks of a beautiful river, Priceless is a camp out filled with beats, breaks, swimming, beaching and art. This set was recorded Midnight – 1:30am, Saturday, September 27th. This set was followed by Androcell, making a night of Deep, Dubby, Dreamy music in the Chill Dome.

Amie Street seems to have a decent catalog of music, including both Ambient and Psytrance, the two genres I tend to buy most digitally, so I will definitely be back to browse again for sweet deals on older albums I may have missed. Check ‘em out, they don’t have everything, but they’ll probably have something you’re into, and you might just save a buck or two or three buying from them versus iTunes, or whoever your preferred digital shop may be.

This set was recorded live at the 2009 edition of Eclipse, an annual psytrance festival held at the Bonnet Rouge campground in Ste-Thérèse-de-la-Gatineau, Québec. My time slot was 9pm to 11pm on the opening night, Friday. Since people were just arriving I opted to play a deep and driving blend of techno and progressive psytrance to warm up the crowd and get everyone excited for the three days and nights of music to come. As with any live recording there are a few imperfections but I am mostly happy with how it all came out. Given how early I was on, many of my friends from Toronto were unable to catch it, so posting this set is also my way of saying “here’s what you missed!”

I recently got his Love on Saturn release from Thoughtless Music and it is a fine piece of heady techno. I don’t get an opportunity to play this sort of stuff out all that often, but it is just as great as listening music.

Also, keep an eye out for his upcoming release, Undercurrent, on Somnia. That’s going to be two great tastes coming together in something quite fabulous.

Sending Orbs, purveyors of the highest quality chilltronica, have released another stunning gem of an album, Yagya’s Rigning. “Rigning” is Icelandic for ”rain”, and as the name suggests, this 10-track masterpiece takes the rain theme and runs with it through its entirety. This album is drenched in rain samples around which all other elements are placed. Keeping close to the formula of dubby minimal techno, but certainly presenting a new vision of it, the basic recipe used here is a subtly mixed 4-on-the-floor kick drum to provide some structure as the heady, dub bass lines add just a touch of groove. Meanwhile, rain samples and beautiful pads provide space and atmosphere as gentle sprinkles of tinkling melodies really take you on a smooth emotional journey. There is nothing heavy handed about this release. Each track is delicate and mellow and yet so easily captures your mind and washes it clean of stress and worry.

I’ve listened to the album daily since I received it. Not many albums in my collection can make that same claim, but there is just something so lovely about Rigning that when it ends, starting it all over again is my instant reaction. You don’t have to just take my word for it, though. There are plenty of others that have had equal praise, and have said it all much more eloquently than I can. Or better yet, be your own judge. Over the years ManMadeMan have built up a huge catalog and have released music across the world on many compilations and Labels whilst gigging around the globe. In every genre there are those precious few producers that continually redefine the cutting edge and really push the boundaries of electronic music itself. Jnr Hacksaw is a breakbeat producer that has been doing just that. I’ve seen his style described as psybreaks, electrobreaks, and glitchbreaks, but whatever it’s called, it is certainly awesome. He manages to take the thick and heady atmosphere of dark drum and bass, layer it upon super slick sub basslines, and cover it all in a thick ooze of brain melting sound design and audio wreckage. His music can be very reminiscent of another breakbeat artist on the edge, Tipper, but with a much more heavy-handed psychedelic sheen.

There are very few artists that produce a golden track every time, but Jnr Hacksaw certainly hits pretty close to that mark.
