Woo(b)! The loooooooooong awaited new album from cinematic ambient master, Woob, dropped today. This is very good news. I’ve been a huge Woob fan since I was first passed a copy of his Em:t Records, 1194 release, which remains one of my all-time favorites. Woob’s deep atmospheric textures mingle with live instrumentation and half heard voices from a movie never filmed, and Repurpose does little mess with this winning formula. The spiritual successor to Woob 1194 this album takes a couple of tracks from Woob 4495 and various Em:t compilations that Woob appeared on. throws in a couple of new lengthy excursions and blends it all together into a new listening experience.

Finally! Some fresh new music from northwest psychill hero, Phutureprimitive. Out today is the Luminous EP, containing three new(ish) tracks. I say “newish” because it seems like Rain has been dropping these tracks in his sets for a while, and it’s nice to finally have my own copies to play out. Style-wise, fans of his first album and subsequent compilation contributions will recognize that signature Phutureprimitive moody atmosphere and delicious bass lines. What’s new is the addition of lyrical vocals in the forefront of the mix as the new driving force for each track. These lyrics, by Alyssa Palmer and Rain, have been tastefully edited and are seamless additions to the already lush Phutureprimitive soundscape. Vocals of this caliber seem to be tricky to find in this kind of electronica, and Rain pulls it off. My gut tells me that some old fans will not be so into this new lyrical direction, but it will most certainly open up his music to an even wider audience. With Phutureprimitive now performing as a full band, this new direction should be not much of a surprise, and thankfully, in Rain’s capable hands the vocals and music continue to push the mature downtempo vibe that first caught the world’s ear six years ago.

Here’s the May 2010 installment of Psilicon Dreams, my monthly mix of psychedelic downtempo electronica for DI.FM’s Psychill channel. This mix spends the first half in a deep, mellow vibe, then moves into a dubbed-out groove, and finishes with the lovely heights of Kuba’s “Cruze Control”.

This set was recorded live in the in Chillography Downtempo Dinosaur room at Kinetic 4 at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, WA on April 3, 2010. John and I performed under the short-lived name of “A Delicate Moment”, which was quickly killed for being at bit too precious of a name. Band names are hard! Beats and textures by me, Leave Trace, and cello by John Ames.

It’s here! Kinetic 4 at the Pacific Science Center. We’ve been planning our portion of this event for sometime now and now it is time to make it all happen. Chillography is excited to not only have the best room in the entire PSC for stage (freaking robot dinosaurs!), but also having perhaps our best line-up yet. This will not suck.

Much of my excitement also comes from the fact that John Ames and I get to debut our new music project, A Delicate Moment. We play from 10-11, and have an entire hour of brand-spankin’-new melodic, dubby, psychedelic, downtempo goodness, heavily layered with John’s crazy cello skills. This set has been months in the making and I can’t wait to show off the awesome sauce that we have concocted.

Holy hot sauce! The seminal (and much missed) goa/psytrance band The Green Nuns of the Revolution are resurfacing with a chilled out remix album, ala Hallucinogen in Dub.

The Underground psychedelic trance mavericks from England who caused joyous havoc at many an International party in the late 90’s are experiencing a resurgence of interest for which they have changed their socks. PAN ELECTRIC is the artist name for Matt Coldricks’ projects on Absolute Ambient records . The Pan Electric approach of variations rather than re-mixes allows for more creative interpretations of melodies and moods and marks a departure form the rather tired culture of remixes. Quirky, dubby and laced with colour, drama and humour this album is vivid, smells of carnivals, bonfires and tastes like the best spontaneous night in you’ve had. Here is a recording of the my live Leave Trace set from the Oscillate ambient showcase at Chop Suey on Sept. 9, 2009. It was my first solo live set, playing all original music, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Here’s the interview from Gas:

Good news. Paul Frankland is re-releasing his Woob project from his days on the Emit record label. I still remember hearing its cool sounds wafting through the Square Dance offices (recording studio) whilst I was editing my Gas album.

It was the first solo artist album on Emit, and immediately on release in 1994 it was praised by critics and public. It has since become much sought after, fetching high prices secondhand.

I spoke to Paul about the album and his memories about recording it.

MAT JARVIS: What are you re-releasing and when will they be available?

PAUL FRANKLAND: The first Woob album (Woob 1194) will be available worldwide on iTunes by the end of December, and includes a minimalist booklet.

MAT: Which are your favourite tracks on the album?

PAUL: Odonna/Strange Air. I’m fond of them all though.

MJ: Most of the tracks are ten minutes or longer, was this a conscious decision to make lengthy tracks, or did they just happen?

PF:The way I wrote the tracks back then, was like a live performance and so I never heard the track complete or knew the length till it was over, but yes it was a conscious decision, although 25 minutes into mixing ‘On Earth’ there was a heart pounding moment when I improvised a synth section. Its probably my favorite bit of the whole album now though.

What were you trying to create when you started writing the album, and did it turn out as you first envisioned?

I tried to create an album with a loose narrative that guides the listener’s mind through different environments. I also wanted the LP to sound as organic as possible without any too thin or too electronic sounding synths.

What was the process for writing the album?

I had an Atari ST running Sequencer One plus, an Akai s950, Gem s2, a boss delay pedal, home made reverb, tape deck, ghetto-blaster, video recorder and a DAT machine. I made rough sets of each track, then took everything with me into the studio and finished off the tracks using the extra equipment available. Every track was mixed and performed live, none were edited down.

How much use did you make of the Roland RSS 3D processor?

Ha- yeah that was massive and expensive and we did use it on every track but it was pretty limited and was only of real use on percussion tracks to add an extra dimension. Still, it must have had some lasting effect on me as around 10 years ago I was given a cut-down rack version as a present, and I am using it on some of the new material.

What is your one memory of your time on the Emit label?

I remember the first time I stepped into the live room at Square Centre studios – it was a vast, open space with a control room overlooking around 15 foot above.

And, what is a Woob? Wuub?

Woob was a made up word. that sounded unique.
Wuub is a hybrid of woob and dub.

What was the thinking behind choosing penguins for the cover?

The label managers (Chris & Dave) said to me that they would really like to use Penguins for the cover and what did I think. I’d just written the track Emperor and was going to suggest the same. It was a very strange coincidence

In addition to a consistently great selection of tunes, PsyAmb also writes a bit about each track, giving you some history and insight into each piece of music. Certainly something he deserves some applause for. I love that sort of insight. Don’t miss his write-up for this Posford mix. Incidentally, the new Shpongle album’s liner notes contain a sweet little blurb on each track detailing its production process. They offer some fun insight into a true gem of an album.

Every second Saturday, tune in at 9am US PST/12pm US EST/5pm UK/18:00 Central Europe to stream my special blend of double-dipped chillout beats and bleeps. I’ve been a constant listener of DI.FM’s various streaming stations for years and I’m stoked to be involved with their broadcasting of a genre that I happen to be particularly fond of.

Hooray! The Chillography 201 sets are now available for download.:) Click on over to the Chillography downloads page and enjoy the sunshine inspired music from Crispy, Lara, 0×86, EQlateral (live), Osiris Indriya, and Hendrik, recorded one amazing summer day on the Seattle waterfront.

Starting at 8pm at the ridiculously awesome venue of St. Mark’s Cathedral will be Water Sines, The Concert.

On the evening of November 7, the Water Sines orchestra will perform improvisational music for meditation. The diverse ensemble showcases music inspired by guitarist Sidney Genette. It features Native American flautist Paul Wagner, members of Seattle’s EQLateral string quartet and a host of instrumental soloists. Special guest artists from many cultures will whisper poems, prayers, and affirmations on the theme of water. Adding to the ethereal experience, a yoga–inspired dance troupe will perform a water blessing ritual. This all takes place against a backdrop of moving water imagery with an accompaniment of river and ocean sounds by audio capturist and Emmy Award–winner Gordon Hempton, renowned for his catalog of nature music.

While that description makes it sound new-age hippy-dippy, and there is much truth to that, what gets me so excited about this is the combination of a stunning acoustic space with a stacked line-up of Seattle’s best forward-thinking musicians, dancers, poets and lighting technicians. I may be a bit biased since I am friends with most of said line-up, but when you get all of those people performing on the same stage, regardless of your interest in ambient music, you cannot go wrong. Truly, this is going to be an epic concert performance at a very special venue that has never housed music like this.

I’ve had the music of The Sight Below on continuous loop all morning, and it has been the perfect companion to the gray drizzly sky outside my window. The bus ride to work this morning was especially dreary, with the Space Needle and downtown just barely peeking through the haze, and it was matched perfectly by the beautiful melancholic guitarscapes and subtle back beats. At times his sound is very reminiscent of Sigor Rós’ more ambient moments, and his bowed guitar style is probably responsible for some of that similarity.

For a sample, be sure to check out “No Place for Us,” a free EP download from Ghostly International. If that floats your boat, then you can’t go wrong with picking up last year’s full length LP, “Glider,” and the recently released “Murmur EP.”

If you like this sort of minimal and moody ambient techno, be sure to also check out Yagya’s “Rigning” album. It’s another stunning example of the genre.

Another fantastic Chillography come and gone. Music-wise, this may have been one of my favorites yet, with Eckoe opening with his perfect blend of psychill, followed by Kalpataru Tree’s siiiiiick dubby goodness, Manahan’s midtempo romp and finally Scott Sunn’s deeeeeep techno shplunking. Add that to Jenna and team’s beautiful makeover of the Church of Bass, Cupcake or Dies baked goodness, and the projected Entranced game, and we had all the right ingredients for a superb party.

The entire night was recorded and I’ll be posting the sets to the Chillography site, once I get around to processing the recording. I’m still working on the recordings from 201, but both shows will be available very soon. I promise!
