Pardon me while I gush about a fantastic piece of music. I’ve been meaning to post about this for a bit now, but haven’t found the right words to do it adequate justice.

Sending Orbs, purveyors of the highest quality chilltronica, have released another stunning gem of an album, Yagya’s Rigning. “Rigning” is Icelandic for ”rain”, and as the name suggests, this 10-track masterpiece takes the rain theme and runs with it through its entirety. This album is drenched in rain samples around which all other elements are placed. Keeping close to the formula of dubby minimal techno, but certainly presenting a new vision of it, the basic recipe used here is a subtly mixed 4-on-the-floor kick drum to provide some structure as the heady, dub bass lines add just a touch of groove. Meanwhile, rain samples and beautiful pads provide space and atmosphere as gentle sprinkles of tinkling melodies really take you on a smooth emotional journey. There is nothing heavy handed about this release. Each track is delicate and mellow and yet so easily captures your mind and washes it clean of stress and worry.

I’ve listened to the album daily since I received it. Not many albums in my collection can make that same claim, but there is just something so lovely about Rigning that when it ends, starting it all over again is my instant reaction. You don’t have to just take my word for it, though. There are plenty of others that have had equal praise, and have said it all much more eloquently than I can. Or better yet, be your own judge. Listen to the clips found here and buy the album here to add this instant classic to your collection.

Portland-based DJ/producer/artist Phidelity, who I’ve mentioned before, has just released his first album via the super-sweet, indie music store Bandcamp. Phidelity’s mid-tempo beats are full of subtle textures, smooth transitions and slick programming. Just what the doc ordered to help us through these lingering days of winter. More info about the album can be found here.

Preview the entire album with the player below and click through to name your own price to purchase individual tracks or the entire album in your preferred digital format.

One of my favorite psytrance groups, ManMadeMan, have just released their latest album, Children of the Light, as a free download. Their previous album, Free To Listen, is available as a free download as well. For both, you can choose either the mixed or tracked albums in both 320kbps MP3 or uncompressed WAV file.

Children Of The Light is ManMadeMan’s latest album and as before with Free To Listen this album is available as a free download.

Over the years ManMadeMan have built up a huge catalog and have released music across the world on many compilations and Labels whilst gigging around the globe. They took the step to release as much music as the could for free, and have been amazed at the reaction and help they have received in doing this.

Whilst a band is often heads down in the studio it can be forgotten that the ultimate aim of making music is the intended listeners, and in this day and age of internet and music download it seems fitting that we embrace this as a perfect medium to allow everyone to listen to the music.

There is nothing lost for anyone, rather a sharing of two sides, the listener and the creator, both intrinsically linked.

Children of the Light is dedicated to all the listeners, dancers, labels, artists and children that have changed the course of history.

Preview the album with the player below and click over to their website to download it in the format of your preference.

Not sure what to do tonight? I’d suggest going to the Simian Mobile Disco show at Neumos. It should be quite a spectacle.

Here’s some footage from an earlier stop in the current tour:

gleetchlab3

One of my favorite pieces of music production software, GleetchLab, just got an update to v3. Gleetchlab is best suited for making glitchy, ambient, experimental sound scapes because at its core, it is about taking existing audio loops and running them through a sonic meat grinder. Previous versions of GleetchLab were used heavily in the making of my Regression Session release.

Each full version update has done a lot to make this one fine audio mangling instrument, and the move to v3 is no exception. Significant progress has been made in making the interface more user friendly and intuitive, plus much needed midi implementation, a new batch of signal processors, quadraphonic mixing and recording, and a parameters recall utility, make for a nice step forward. Sadly, some of my favorite pieces from v2, namely the Lightman controller and Strange Attractor Oscillator are missing from this release. I’m crossing my fingers that they reappear in a future update. Check out this page for some video demos of the new features.

Wow. These Youtube mashups are astounding! Kutiman cuts together videos of people playing solo insturments into full song arrangements. Here are a couple of my favorites, but there are lots more to be seen at the ThruYou site.
